My normal lathe is a 14” model. But this has me wanting to use the Unimat 3 again. I’m going to the site to further check it out. I might very well buy this.

    I have been using this Tryally system with my Unimat 3 for over a year. Yes I had a QCTP for years with the usual HSS and carbide insert tools common on the Unimats, Sherline, Proxon’s etc. I came across a Tryally video once that opened my eyes. I deliberated for weeks and weeks before placing an order. The quality and engineering of the toolpost and accessories is unbeatable, but most of all, the cutting ability, repeated accuracy and sharpness of the carbide inserts has to be used to be believed. There’s no “almost” perfect alignment…once you set center height on each tool holder, even the tool holders with your own ¼” (6mm) cutting tools, they will position and lock perfectly, no matter how many times you change tool holders. When I first got the set and looked at the size of the “tiny” carbide cutters, I was still skeptical even though I had watched many of the Tryally RUclips videos. All I can say is that from nylon to stainless steel, my Unimat 3 has a new life.

    Interesting video, I like your videos! I am starting with sherline lathe and mill and I am planning to make them cnc. For the lthe do you recommend to change x and z axis to cnc and also the spindle? I noticed you are doing threading on a different machine that has only the spindle is stepper and connected with the thread cutting gears to the slide? Can I combine all as I only have one lathe not two :)

    • @tryally
      @tryally 7 месяцев назад

      You could even combine them, but I think it would be a lot of work. I only did it this way because I have other lathes. But with the CNC system you can cut threads, you just need a few modifications and a turn counter (infrared sensor).

    • @buundy
      @buundy 7 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Why do you think it would be hard to combine all? Here is my plan: a strong stepper motor to drive the spindle and two normal steppers to drive the z and x axes. Stepper drivers connected to an usb mach 3 adapter board and configure mach 3 to run the spindle and the other two axes. Do you think it would be possible? That was I would know (and sense) the exact rpm of the spindle if I want to cut threads. Any thoughts?

    • @tryally
      @tryally 6 месяцев назад

      @@buundy Even though the stepper motor is strong, it doesn't offer the right speed for the spindle, DC motors can reach up to six thousand rpm and stepper motors at a maximum of three thousand rpm, if I'm not mistaken. But with the CNC system and an rpm sensor you won't need a stepper motor.

    • @buundy
      @buundy 6 месяцев назад

      Yes but I think that for slow and steady motoric threading the stock Sherline spindle motor would be weak. Do you suggest to replace it with a more powerful motor? Also about the stepper spindle: what materials would need higher rpm than 2500-3000? I plan to mostly machine aluminium, steel, maybe brass sometimes.

    • @tryally
      @tryally 6 месяцев назад

      @@buundy A stronger motor is always better, but it also works well with the standard motor and hold up well. The rpm depends solely on the diameter of the part you are machining. For example, for smaller diameters, higher rpm, for larger diameters lower rpm. You should use this ratio for any material, and over time you will learn this by intuition.

    Hi Luiz, thanks for posting such great videos. Are you using the standard plastic gibs for your z-axis? I have a Sherline 5400 CNC mill and have a problem where if I try to mill a circle it ends up a slightly oval shape. The deeper the cut I take, the more pronounced the oval shape I get. I'm suspicious it's because the plastic gibs on the z-axis aren't holding the spindle very rigidly when the cutting forces are in a certain direction. Have you ever heard of this problem before? Cheers, James

    • @tryally
      @tryally 9 месяцев назад

      Hi James, thanks for the kind words. Yes, I'm using the standard plastic gibs So, when a circle it ends up a slightly oval shape, the problem is (100% of cases) backlash in X/Y axis. I've had this problem in the past. It may be important to replace the nut and leadscrew, and or adjust the backlash system. This means that the smaller the backlash, the more precise the circle will be.

      I made the screw exactly like the manufacturer's, the thread doesn't reach all the way when screwed all the way up. Thank you for your comment.

    After a busy summer I finally got to assemble my Sherline mill and lathe, and this tool post have been a pleasure to work with. Thanks for all the inspiring videos!

    How do I get the original block started? Sanding the edges or milling somehow?

      It can be done both ways, i.e., both ways give good results in my opinion.

    Which is your favorite Sherline mill? Are all cnc now?

      I love the 2010 model, it is my favorite mill, and yes, all cnc now, lathes and mills, I'm using Sherline standard drive box, they work very well for me.
